The Asgiriya Chapter has said that imprisoned State Intelligency Service officers must be granted a general pardon after considering the country's requirement.
The services rendered by these officers to defeat terrorism within the country was no easy task, the Supreme Sangha Council of Asgiriya Chapter said in a special statement.
The Council said that the current religious extremism in the country had expanded since certain experienced Intelligence officers were impriosned due to several reasons.
Further, the statement said that certain politicians played a hand in releasing the suspects who were involved in vandalising Buddhist statues in Mawanella recently.
Accordingly, the Sangha Council of the Asgiriya Chapter has written to the President, Prime Minister, Opposition Leader, and other relevant officials on the measures which need to be taken to eliminate Islamic extremist elements from the country.
The letter had insisted that people reject a leadership which succumbs to foreign influence instead of understanding the religious extremism in the country.
