Life in Bandarawela town has come to a standstill today with a major protest over effects of the Uma Oya multipurpose project. All shops and commercial establishments have been closed down while state institutions had reduced staff.
A protest is being staged in the town forcing Badulla - Colombo and several other buses to take alternative routes. The protest backed by villagers affected is also supported by several environmental organizations. The villagers claim over 7000 houses have suffered damages and water resources are drying up.
