Captain H.W.D Jayawickrama and Corporal S.S Wijekumara who lost their lives while serving at a UN Peacekeeping operation in Mali were posthumously promoted to the ranks of Major and Sergeant respectively on the recommendation of the Ministry of Defence and the Commander of the Army.
A communiqué issued by the Military Secretariat at the Army Headquarters as well as the Directorate of Personnel Administration confirmed those promotions today (Jan 30).
Major Jayawickrama belonged to the 11th Sri Lanka Light Infantry from Polonnaruwa and Sergeant S.S Wijekumara belonging to the Mechanized Infantry Regiment from Thalakolawewa, Polpithigama.
