One person has died while two others have been hospitalised following a shooting in the Beralihela area in Lunugamvehara last night, police said.
According to the police, the victims who were part of a group which comprised more than 15 members had initially engaged in minor fistcuffs with another group during a drunken brawl at around 9:30 pm in the area.
The other group had left the area following the fight and had later returned in order to carry out the shooting, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said.
The deceased in the shooting has been identified as a 27-year old resident of Tissamaharama while the two injured victims have been identified as 28 and 39-year old residents of Lunugamvehara and the Pannegamuwa areas.
They were admitted to the Lunugamvehara hospital before being transferred to the Debarawewa Hospital following which they were admitted to the Hambantota hospital for further treatment.
No arrests have been made following the incident so far, police said adding that Lunugamvehara Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
