The Organization to safeguard Uma Oya is planning to hold a massive public protest tomorrow (28) in Bandarawela town over the Government's alleged inaction to assist those who have been victims of the 'distructive' Uma Oya Project and for not taking measures to protect the central highlands which are under threat from the project.
Convenor of the organization, Uva Provincial Councilor Samantha Vidyaratne claimed 7037 buildings including schools, houses and shops have cracked. Buildings in the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Uva Paranagama, Welimada, Hali-Ela, Bandarawela, Ella and Wellawaya have been affected, rendering residents of these areas helpless, he further said.
Mr Vidyaratne added that two months ago, a leak occurred at the main tunnel of the Uma Oya Project but neither the Government nor the Iranian company in charge of the project have been able to plug the leak thus far. This has resulted in 976 liters of water a second leaking from the tunnel. As such, some 8,43,26,400, or over 84 million liters of water are leaking every single day, he charged.
