One individual in a group of four engaged in illegal sand mining died after jumping into the Mahaweli river, as he mistook a group of individuals clad in typical army fatigues, to that of army personnel.
The man, is reported to have jumped into the Mahaweli river along with three others, after they had mistaken the group, in a bid to evade arrest.
Police have identified the deceased as 24-year old Lathiff Mohamed Zahran, a resident of Mutur.
The three others had safely swam back towards the shore, police said adding that the group which was clad in army kits was also not present when police had arrived in the area.
A questioning is being carried out into the three suspects while the remains of the deceased currently lie at the Mutur Hospital.
