The Sri Lanka Telecom CEO’s resignation, trade union demands of annual bonus payment and the government’s decision to allow Dialog for coverage enhancements including fixed line operations will come up for discussions at an emergency board meeting this afternoon (Monday) in Colombo, SLT sources said.
This meeting will be convened on a request made by Maxis, the Malaysian-based telecommunication company which has a 49 per cent stake in SLT. The emergency meeting comes in the backdrop of a current visit to Sri Lanka by Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak. The visiting leader arrived yesterday.
The sources said the Board will decide as to whether the vacant Group CEOs post should be filled internally from one of the chief officers or from calling applications from suitable foreign telecom expert.
However all trade unions of SLT are protesting against filling the CEO’s post internally as almost all chief officers are under alleged corruption charges, a trade union leader said.
A special 3-member committee headed by retired Court of Appeal judge, Justice N .Sunil Rajapaksha is investigating into malpractices and irregularities at the company since 2008, he said adding that several chief officers are being accused of corruption and malpractices.
He said that the unions are also against allowing Dialog coverage enhancements including fixed line operations. (Bandula)
