Suspect sentenced to life over bombing of Maj. Gen. Janaka Perera

News

A suspect who was convicted over the 2008 suicide bombing which killed 30 persons including Major General Janaka Perera, was handed a life imprisonment term and a 60-year term to be served separately, yesterday (May 21).

Umar Habbab, who was named as the second respondent to the case, was found guilty over 31 out of 48 charges levelled against him by the Attorney General.

Court sentenced the suspect to 20 years of imprisonment each for the first, second and third charges while imposing a life imprisonment term for charges 4-31.

The assets of Habbab which included an expensive watch gifted by LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, a cyanide pill, and an LTTE kit were confiscated and are to be handed over to the Terrorist Investigations Department's museum.

Previously, another suspect who was found guilty over the case had been sentences to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.

Nine other persons who were also named as suspects were released since sufficient evidence was not available to prove the charges against them.
