Trail 2016 continues

Trail 2016, organized to raise funds to build a new cancer unit for the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, is currently ongoing with the participation of hundreds of walkers. The walk, from Point Pedro to Dondra Head, began in Jaffna on October 6 and conclude on November 2. 

Trail was the brainchild of two friends and colleagues- Sarinda Unamboowe and Nathan Sivagananathan. The first walk took place in 2011 from Dondra Head to Point Pedro. Originally organized to build a cancer treatment unit as part of an extension of the Tellippalai Hospital in Jaffna, the USD 2.6 million (Approximately LKR 382 Million) raised through the walk ultimately paved the way for the construction of an entirely new Cancer Hospital, which has treated over 4500 patients thus far. 

This year, organizers hope to raise USD 5 million (Approximately LKR 735 Million) to build a new cancer unit at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle.  

Walkers can still join Trail 2016 for either a 3-day period, a single day, or to walk through a city or town depending on their capabilities. 

Cricket legends Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene are took part in the first stage of the walk, which began in Jaffna on Thursday.
