Two in custody over Kalutara prison bus attack

Two persons, including a woman, have been arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) in connection with the attack on a prison bus in Kalutara on February 27. Five prisoners and two prison guards were killed in the attack.  

Police Headquarters said the woman, who was arrested from Walahanduwa in Galle, had allegedly provided refuge to one of the attackers. According to police, investigators have found that in the subsequent days following the ambush, the woman had helped to hide the suspect at her home. The second individual, who was arrested from Pinwatta in Panadura, is accused of acting as an informant who had conducted surveillance to assist the attackers. 

Five police teams under the supervision of Senior DIG (Crimes and Traffic) Western Province, Nandana Munasinghe are currently investigating the case. Police said all main suspects involved in the attack have now been identified and that they had all fled their areas of residence and were in hiding in various parts of the country. 

Meanwhile, two police teams are also stationed at the Katunayake and Mattala International Airports due to information that some of those involved in the attack were planning to flee the country. Special measures have also been initiated to prevent the suspects fleeing the country by boat, police added.
