United Lawyers’ Association, a collective of senior lawyers today (Aug 30) called for a change in the United National Party (UNP) leadership, claiming that the party under Ranil Wickremesinghe had suffered consecutive defeats over a quarter of a century.
President of the Association, Upul Jayasuriya added that as the UNP is yet to declare its candidate for the upcoming Presidential polls, Mr. Wickremesinghe should step down respectfully instead of attempting to influence the party to nominate him as a candidate.
The lawyers collective gathered under the banner of “Enough is enough” demanded that UNP leader should step aside for the common good of the party and the country as a whole.
“If there is no democracy within the party, how can we preach democracy to the country?,” Mr Jayasuriya pleaded.
He also added that while the UNP is struggling with internal issues, the opposition party has declared its candidate who would be bringing terror to the country if elected.
“Those who terrorized the media, processionals, masses and ran white van squads are planning to run the country with dictatorship. We shouldn’t allow that to happen,” the Association President said.
