The United National Party (UNP) has suspended the membership of Weligama Urban Council Chairman Rehan Jayawickreme for breaching the party's disciplinary code, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.
Mr. Jayawickreme's membership had been cancelled since he had criticised the party's leadership by releasing several letters to that effect to the media, MP Kariyawasam explained.
He also noted that the Chairman was summoned before the party headquarters in Sirikotha to conduct a disciplinary inquiry recently. He had then pledged to refrain from violating the disciplinary code in future.
However, the UNP General Secretary pointed out that the Urban Council Chairman had repeated the offence very recently leading to the suspension of his membership, Mr. Kariywasam explained.
