A makeshift stand at the Galle International Cricket stadium were among the many structures that collapsed as strong winds and gloomy skies delayed the start of the second day’s play of the first Test between Sri Lanka and Australia on Thursday (30).
Rain started pouring down around one-and-a-half hours before the start of play and strong winds damaged many makeshift stands including one that was erected right of the main pavilion.
However, no one was present at the time of the incident.
A glass window of another temporary shelter next to the media centre was shattered to pieces in the wind.
The full ground remained covered during the entirety of the first session despite rain having ceased at the moment.
Spinners dominated the proceedings on day one as 13 wickets fell.
After Sri Lanka were bowled out for 212 runs in the first essay, Australia lost three wickets for 98, trailing by 114 runs.
