After stuttering at 63 for four, Royal reached a formidable 326 for eight thanks to a record-breaking stand for the fifth wicket stand between Captain Dasis Manchanayake and Ramiru Perera when bad light forced early stumps on the opening day of the Battle of the Blues.
Manchanayake played a remarkable rescue act at the SSC, helping his side to a strong position on the day along with Ramiru Perera.
Left-handed Manchanayake, though expected to break more records, was eventually dismissed for 137.
Ramiru Perera played a great supporting role to his skipper and involved with a record 229-run stand for the fifth wicket.
During the dominating partnership, they eclipsed their own royal record of 165 and Thomian’s record of 187.
The pair piled runs in an unstoppable fashion, during the wicket-less post-lunch session.
They were eventually dismissed in the post-tea session.
Left-handed Manchanayake hit 17 fours’ in his 150-ball 137. He reached his fifty off 54 deliveries to the delight of Royal.
Ramiru Perera scored 128, comprising 15 fours and 2 sixes. It was his maiden hundred in a big match.
Royal, invited to take the first lease of the wicket, were stuttering before losing four quick wickets.
A fruitful morning session for the shield holders Thomians saw their fast-bowlers firing in on cylinders.
The pick of them was Akash Fernando taking four for 55 and Kavindu Dias accounting for three victims.
Though the Thoras struck late wickets, the day clearly belonged to the Royalists after an admirable and spirited comeback.
The action is due for an early resumption on the second day.
