Squash: Sadev Priyanjith from Kurunegala Boygane MV runner up at Boys U-15 Novices event

(SLS) - As part of its grand plan for squash development, Sri Lanka Squash (SLS) initiated the pathways for regional development program in 2022 in Galle and completed its second phase in Trincomalee.

On World Squash Day 2022, along with the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lankan SLS officials headed by President Suren Kohombange and Sri Lanka Squash Regional committee headed by Col Kaminda Silva launched its third rural program in Kurunegala in October 2022 with a primary focus on Boyagane Maha Vidyalaya nestled in the village of Boyagane some 46 miles away from Colombo.

The program included a introductory program to squash, a coaching camp and handing over of squash equipment to these school children in front of a large school gathering. The program has continued since then. Following up was the master training program in the adjacent Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment squash courts situated within walking distance from the school. SLS obtained the support of SL Army squash coaches and coordinated a training program for the 15-member team from school for 3 days a week.

Among the participants was Sadev Priyajith, one of the most enthusiastic players. Fast forward 100 days Sadev travels to Colombo with 7 players and school leadership team including Nirmal Fernando Extra activity in Charge, MIC Ms. Ramya Rajapakshe and Sports master Kushan Pannila to take part in a National Ranking tournament organized by SLS. Determined to overcome the challenges posed  by players from Colombo with a more affluent back ground and with better facilities, he works his way up to become runner up in his event making a dream come true for his Alma Mater, Boygane Maha Vidyalaya, its staff and Sri lanka Squash .

Suren Kohombange President SLS says “I am delighted by the success of our program which was  fully funded by SLSs internal budgets and supported by Sri Lanka Army. I hope that this success will encourage our dear sponsors to help us to expand the program in Kurunegala and programs in Galle and Trincomalee. I do hope that with this success we achieve our long-cherished dream of taking sport to regional pathways and to include Jaffna and Batticaloa in the next wave. I also must thank our Vice President Col Kaminda Silva who was the main drive behind the program and the Principal of Boygane Maha Vidyalaya Ms. RMJ Rupasinghe who worked tirelessly with challenges to bring these kids to this level.”
