Basketball: Quarter-finalists found in Percy Perera Memorial Tournament

Maris Stella College, Negombo, Ananda College, St Anne’s College Kurunegala and hosts St. Benedict’s College entered the semi-finals (Segment A) of the Percy Perera Memorial Basketball Carnival continued at the Benedictine Courts in Kotahena on Saturday (19).

As part of St. Benedict’s College’s 150th year jubilee celebrations, the school authorities along with the blessings of the Old Bens Sports Club organised this basketball carnival and named after one of the finest basketball players produced by the school – late Percy Perera.

Staged as a gratitude to this legendary Cager player for his services to his alma mater and to the country seventeen invited schools basketball teams took part in this tournament which started on Friday with the preliminary rounds.

In the first of the quarter-final matches played yesterday Maris Stella College had found things on their way to score an easy 38 points to 10 win over Wesley College, Colombo. 

Inosh played a tireless game to be the leading scorer with a contribution of 10 shots for the winners while Ryan with 4 was the top scorer for the Wesleyites.

In the quarter-final two Ananda College went on a rampage to defeat Christ King College, Ja-ela with a massive 60-12 win. 

Anandians went on the attack from the start thus upsetting the Christ King’s plans. For the winners Shanaka had a rich harvest to be the top scorer with 22 points and Kanjula scored 4 for the losers.

St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala had to fight all the way to topple St. Anthony’s College, Wattala who went down fighting to lose 21 to 34 in the third quarter-finals. A.D.M. Fernando was the most outstanding player (15) for the Kurunegala lads while Supun (9) played well for the Wattala boys.

Host St. Benedict’s College always lived to their reputation as a leading basketball playing schools in the island made their berth to the semi-finals with a 28-13 victory over Isipathana College in the last quarter of the day. 

Minura with 10 points stood outstanding for the Bens and Namitha (5) top scored for the losers.

In the first semi-final Maris Stella meet Ananda and in the second semi-finals St. Anne’s lock horns with Bens on Sunday (20) and the finals will take place on Monday (21) at 4.00pm.
