Sport

England beat Bangladesh by 8 wickets to win the curtain raiser game of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 played at the Kennington Oval in London on Thursday (1).

Put into bat first Bangladesh posted 305 for the loss of 6 wickets with opener Tamim Iqbal hitting 128 runs off 142 deliveries.

England raced to victory by scoring 308 for the loss of 2 wickets with 16 balls to spare after Joe Root's unbeaten 133 off 129 balls laid the foundation.

For Bangladesh Iqbal was the anchor man as he hit 12 fours and three sixes during his elegant knock while wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim clobbered 79 off 72 balls with eight boundaries to help the opener.

Both Iqbal and Rahim put together a partnership of 166 runs for the third wicket to annoy the Englishmen.

Fast bowler Liam Plunkett claimed four scalps.

England got off to a miserable start when they lost the wicket of opener Jason Roy at 6 but Alex Hales and Root became a nightmare duo to the Bangladeshis when they put on 159 runs for the second wicket.

Hales made a quick-fire 95 off 86 inclusive of 11 fours and two sixes as Root hit 11 fours and a six during his knock of 133.

Root then got together with skipper Eoin Morgan to form an unfinished partnership of 143 for the third wicket as England sealed a remarkable victory.

Morgan remained unbeaten on 75 off 61 deliveries inclusive of eight boundaries and two sixes.

Hosts England and Bangladesh are playing from Group 'A' where Australia and New Zealand are the remaining two teams in the group.

Australia will take on New Zealand at Birmingham  on Friday (2).

Bangladesh 305 for 6 wickets (50) (Tamim Iqbal 128, Soumya Sarkar 28, Imrul Kayes 19, Mushfiqur Rahim 79, Sabbir Rahman 24, Liam Plunkett 4/59)

England 308 for 2 wickets (47.2) (Alex Hales 95, Joe Root 133n.o, Eoin Morgan 75n.o.)
