A recent conference held at the University of Moratuwa's Faculty of Information Technology featuring key agricultural and IT institutions has proposed a 'coordinating body' to embed IT into the agricultural development process, according to a statement by Sri Lanka's Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA). Also proposed at the conference was the aggregation of existing agricultural knowledge otherwise locked away at organizations such as the government's agriculture department, faculties of agriculture at local universities, etc. as well as providing easy access to this information, all through IT.
Comprising representatives of the Faculty of Information Technology of the University of Moratuwa, the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Ruhuna, the Sri Lanka Agricultural Economics Association and ICTA, the conference highlighted ‘Agent Technology’ and ‘Ontology’ as possible solutions for effectively aggregating and accessing "the vast resources of agricultural knowledge" reported to be available domestically. |
