Due to increasing competition in the education sphere, an education in marketing is attracting fewer students, according to President of the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM), Saliya Weerasekara. He also indicated that steps were being taken by SLIM to rectify this situation including promoting awareness of marketing at the 'school level'.
This was revealed at the kick-off to the 2009 edition of SLIM's Brand Excellence awards, an event in its eighth consecutive year for which, again according to Mr. Weerasekara, "year-on-year the number of entries has increased." Scheduled to be held on October 29 at Water's Edge, this event is open to participation from any local and international brands 'currently marketed' in Sri Lanka.
Further revealed were this year's award categories, which mirror last year's, which include “Product Brand of the Year, Service Brand of the Year, Innovative Brand of the Year, Turnaround Brand of the Year, Local Brand of the Year, Best New Entrant of the Year, International Brand of the Year, Small Business Brand of the Year, CSR Brand of the Year and Export Brand of the Year”. The judging panel for 2009 comprises Godwin Perera (Chairman), Ravi Liyanage, Pravir Samarasinghe, S. SriKanth, Rohantha Athukorala, Dileep Mudadeniya, Wasantha Mallikarachchi, Priyadarshini Karunaratne, Pravin Madawala and Chalaka Gajabahu. |
