Upul Nishantha, the Matara Mayor and SLFP’s chief organiser for the district has extended his support to Opposition Presidential candidate General (retd.)Sarath Fonseka yesterday.
Mr.Nishantha said his decision was based on two factors - namely the escalation of election related violence in his area directed at political opponents which he did not want to be a party to and his support for the polices of Gen. Fonseka.
The Mayor said he had lodged a complaint with the Police that since he took the decision, he had received many threatening phone calls and has therefore been given special security by the Police. |
