A Sri Lankan firm is stepping up promotion of green tea consumption in the backdrop of the rising green tea export volumes from here.
Melfort Green Teas (Pvt) Ltd will be launching a publicity campaign for this purpose highlighting green tea as Sri Lanka’s hidden pot of gold as it has the ability to fight many diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer, Parkinson and also Strokes. Green tea exports have risen to 1,067 metric tons during the first quarter of this year, up 916% or 521 metric tons against the same period last year. The secret of green tea lies in the fact that it’s rich in catechin polyphenols, said Tiran Peiris, Deputy Managing Director/C.E.O of the company and a Consultant to Pussellawa Plantations.
Mr. Peiris said he has received extensive training in Japanese Green Tea in Japan, Chinese Green Tea in China, Oolng Tea in Taiwan and also went on study tours to Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Kenya (on tea extracts & aroma) and Korea as well as having mastered the tea planting process as a planter and gained international exposure on green tea marketing in Russia, Japan, France, USA, South Africa and Korea.
He noted that scientists in Japan have found that EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate) in green tea can stop HIV from binding to healthy immune cells and it can help stop the HIV virus from spreading. He said the Melfort tea processing plant at Sanquhar estate in Nuwara Eliya is producing top quality green tea. Sanquhar is said to be the oldest tea plantation in Sri Lanka, dating back to the 19th century. |
