The power supply in Vadamarachchi, Jaffna district, is totally unreliable and unpredictable. You never know when the supply will be cut off.
Residents are officially informed of a 12-hour power cut once a week, usually on Saturdays, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The power cut is for repair and maintenance work, we are told.
If there was only one power cut a week, we could learn to live with it. But in fact there are power interruptions all day, every day of the week.
You dare not start a job of work using electrical equipment because of the sudden power failures. Companies and factories have their generators to fall back on, while we ordinary citizens have to put up with a huge inconvenience.
Some nights there are power cuts that last for up to three hours.
Politicians make regular visits to Jaffna, but no one has done anything to alert the Electricity Board about what is happening in Vadamarachchi.
