Seated at a table with a group of children, four-year-old Diranga Adhikari is so absorbed in a painting that all efforts to grab his attention are met with; “no I am painting!” That’s how much he enjoys the creative activities he engages in at the Cora Abraham Art Classes.
An exhibition of creative expressions of the students at the Cora Abraham school titled ‘61 Years of Education through Art,’ will be held on October 16 and 17 at the Lionel Wendt from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Established in 1949 by visionary art teacher Cora Abraham, the school seeks to promote education through art among children in the age groups of 4+ to 18.
“Our aim is to make the child sensitive to express themselves through the medium of art. Every child is creative, what we try to do is to bring out that creativity in them- to help them express their feelings. There is a lot of freedom in the class as it is guidance rather than teaching,” says Chandramani Thenuwara, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the school.
The upcoming exhibition will feature about 300 creative expressions of about 200 students at the art school belonging to various age groups from collages, to sketches, ink paintings, glass paintings, crayon work, clay items, handicrafts etc depicting various themes. It is open to the public free of charge.
