My Dad was a soft-spoken, mild-mannered and charming person, whose passing means that one more gentleman is lost to this world.
Affectionately referred to as Gerry Mahaththaya, Dad was liked and respected by all our neighbours. They would go out of their way to help him, whenever he needed anything. To us, he was a loving father who, when his business was doing well, spared no expense to give his children – two girls and a boy – a good education.
I especially remember how he would take me to the cinema, before my sisters were born. Once, we spent an entire day inside cinemas, watching film after film.
When we were very young and believed in Santa Claus, we would be showered with gifts. For a moment, I thought I had died and gone to heaven, because Santa had brought me everything I wanted, and more.
My little sister Jackie, who lives in England, was unable to be present at my father’s funeral, which took place on October 7, 2009. She would have appreciated the big crowd that came to pay their last respects to a man of few words, who touched the hearts and minds of all who knew him and loved him.
We miss you, Dadda. May the Lord who holds us all in His tender care receive you in Heaven to live with Him for all eternity.
Fondly remembered by your loving family, Wife June, and Ramon,
Jascinda and Jacqueline.
