Old Antonians Rugby Club, Kandy showed their class in rugby by beating Matale RFC, 41 to 15 points in the Cup final to emerge champions at the Central Province inter-club rugby sevens tournament played at the Edward Park ground in Matale on July 24. Nine teams from Kandy and Matale participated in this one-day tournament conducted by the Central Province Rugby Football Union (CPRFU) under the guidance of its president Mohan Samarakoon, as a part of their programme to promote and popularize rugby in the Matale region. CPRFU donated cash and two rugby balls to each of the nine teams participating. Deputy Minister of Transportation and MP for Matale Rohana Dissanayake was the chief guest.
Results of finals:
Cup: Champions – Old Antonians RC, Kandy beat Matale RFC 41-15.
Plate: Champions – University of Peradeniya beat Katugastota RFC 22-12.
Bowl: Champions – Sarasavi Uyana RFC beat Rahula RFC, Katugastota by 45-3. |
