Sri Lanka Assistant Coach ‘CP’ resigns

Former Royal, CR & FC and Kandy SC coach C. P Abeygoonawardena has verbally announced his unavailability to the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union. Earlier he accepted the post of Assistant Coach cum Manager for the national rugby sevens team. Sri Lanka will participate in two sevens tournaments in Shanghai and Malaysia this year. Both these tournament are in the Asian circuit.

‘CP’ was assisting Ellen Meachen- Head Coach at the recently concluded Asian Five Nations Rugby Tournament. Further the visa of the Sri Lankan Head Coach Ellen Meachen had expired. In order to obtain a visa for a temporary extension he had left the country for a short holiday to an Asian country.

There are two nominees for the post of Manager for the schools under 18 tour of Ireland and for the Youth Commonwealth Games in England. Usually one representative is selected for this but in a blind side move SLRFU have opted for Tuan Dole.

Speaking to the Sunday Times Susantha Mendis Secretary of the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Union (SLSRFA) said that they have already informed on their representative to the SLRFU and NOC (National Olympic Committee). The tour is schedule to take place in September this year with a sevens tournament. Already Nilufer Ibrahim has been picked as coach of the Youth team.
