Bandarawela illuminated with long awaited workshop

A quiz competition and a workshop, organized by the Education sections of the Sunday Times and Daily Mirror of Wijeya Newspapers Ltd, was held on a grand scale on 24th of November, 2011 at Bandarawela Madya Maha Vidyalaya Auditorium. It was a tremendous success with participation of 600 students from 8 leading schools in the Bandarawela Zone.

Two students of Bandarawela Madya Maha Vidyalaya Venura and Prashasthi were the talented compeers who conducted the event in an interesting manner. The welcome speech was given by the Secretary of Old Boys’ Association and the IT in charge teacher of Bandarawela M.M.V.Mr.Rajanayake. He was a great strength for the workshop by arranging for the necessary facilities as well as the school prefects to brighten the event.

The first event was the quiz competition organized by the Education Times. The writer of this article acted as the quiz master. Being a team event with five members in each team, the quiz comprised of five round of questions based on five subjects – current affairs, Sports, Science & technology, Art/Literature/Entertainment and General Knowledge, each round consisting of 8 questions. Eight teams participated representing the leading schools of Bandarawela Zone. At the end of each round the scores were displayed on the presentation screen, but the announcing of winners was done at the end keeping their hearts to beat in tension.

The quiz competition was followed by an interactive workshop covering Life &Leadership Skills, & Exam Techniques conducted by a facilitator from Education Times. This was the first time such a workshop was organized in Bandarawela and it was a tremendous success.

The final session of the event was the announcement of winners of the quiz competition and the award ceremony. St’ Thomas’ College, Bandarawela emerged the winners of the Quiz Competition becoming the best in the Zone. Bandarawela Madya Maha Vidyalaya team managed with 1st runners-up while Bandarawela Dharmapala Maha Vidyalaya obtained 2nd runners-up. The winners were awarded gift vouchers sponsored by Sarasavi Book Shop and all the participant team members awarded a valuable book sponsored by Wijeya Newspapers Ltd. The principal of Bandarawela Madya Maha Vidyalaya Mr. M.M.Wimalasekar was present as the chief guest at the award ceremony to distribute the awards.

The event was supported by the Old Boys’ Association of Bandarawela Madya Maha
Vidyalaya, Bank of Ceylon, Bandarawela and ICBT Campus, Kandy providing their whole hearted contribution with their sponsorships which helped making the event a great success.
