Hali-ela Madya Maha Vidyalaya (Hali-ela National School) is one of the best schools in the Badulla District. Hali-ela MMV won the District first place among National schools for the Best Annual Report and Accounts competition held on November 10, 2011.

The school was established in 1875 as Badulla Dickwella Maha Vidyalaya. This is one of the oldest schools in Uva Province. Badulla –Deckwella MMV was established firstly as a mixed school for poor students. In 1950 the school was shifted to the present premises. In 1982 the school was renamed as Hali-ela Madya Maha Vidyalaya and the first principal was Mr.Jinadasa Attanayaka. He was the pioneer behind the development of the school. In 2009 the present principal took over the duties of the school and under his supervision Hali-ela National school has become the most popular school in Uva Province.
Today there are nearly 90 academic staff providing high quality services for nearly 1000 students and the students were able to get the highest achievements in all the public examinations during past years. “To bring forth a knowledgeable, qualitative, skilled and a sensitive nation…” is the vision of the school.
“Show greater interest in community and teacher-pupil development, concern about the responses, be armed for best results and be conscious about it continuously, empower the Environmental protection and conservation, launch programmes for the well being of the society and work comparatively” are the ethics we use in our educational system” stated the present principal Mr.M.M.Gunawardena (SLPS 2 I).
During the past few years school has developed rapidly in education as well as sports. Since 2007 they have produced the best number of passes in the Hali-ela division in the grade five scholarship examinations. This year 21 students got through the examination.
Each year, the school has improved academically by producing some good results in G.C.E.(O/L) examinations. The success rate has increased annually by 13% and in G.C.E. (A/L) the number of university entrants has increased yearly.
Students of this school had won so many All Island and provincial medals in Sinhala day, English day, Art, Dance and music competitions. Mas. Suhas Ginwara Dissanayake is a talented artist who won so many the All Island medals in various art competitions.
The cadets’ platoon is the best example for discipline. They are the symbol of pride in the school. They also have the Boys’ and the girls’ cadets’ platoons. They have taken part in the 6th “Herman Loos” Battalion Assessment Camp since 2008, at the National Cadet Corp Training Centre in Rantambe.
The noteworthy feature of this school is the sense of order and the maintenance of the school surroundings. They have developed an environmental team and they have cultivated the school garden with vegetable, fruit and a flower garden.
They are involved in “Global School Partnership” conducted by the British Council and “Baines High School of UK has become their partner school.
Hali-ela National School is famous for its sporting talents too. In 2010 R.M.Lasantha Danushka won 2nd place in 5000 meters at the All Island National Schools’ Athletics Meet. Hali-ela MMV. has excelled at all types of sports in the province and have many victories to their credit.
The intention of Hali-ela National College is to support and create talented and efficient Sri Lankans who will gain international honours.
The primary section of Hali-ela National School has organized its Annual concert, named as “Vihanga Sara” which will be held on December 7, 2011. The management of the school and students has extended an invitation to all well wishers to be present on the occasion.
