News

In the past nine years over 48,000 complaints were made to the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA), but only 413 were investigated and of them only 185 cases were filed in the High Courts,  an Auditor General’s report has revealed.

Last year, according to police statistics, 305 cases statutory rape of females under the age of 16 were reported, and by the end of the year 296 were still pending.

Also in 2019, 80 cases of cruelty to children and 34 cases of sexual exploitation were reported but by the end of the year 77 and 32 cases respectively remained as pending investigations.

The Auditor General’s report has revealed several more shortcomings in implementing laws to protect children (See Sunday Times tomorrow for detailed story)
