Indian national Akash Pachlodia has been sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment, suspended for 10 years, and fined Rs 11 million after pleading guilty to match-fixing allegations during the 2024 Legends Cricket Trophy in Sri Lanka.
The Kandy High Court handed down the sentence today. Pachlodia, who was the Team Manager of Punjab Royal during the 2024 Legends Cricket Trophy held in Pallekele in March, found himself at the centre of the scandal.
The investigation was initiated after a retired Sri Lankan cricketer and a New Zealand cricketer accused Indian cricket manager Yoni Patel and his assistant, Akash Pachlodia, of attempting to fix matches during the tournament.
Yoni Patel, the owner of the Kandy Samp Army team, was initially charged with match-fixing during the tournament in Kandy.
Sri Lanka became the first South Asian nation to criminalize various match-fixing offences, and this case marks the first to be prosecuted under the new regulations.
