Volleyball: 5 National spikers treated for dengue at Negombo and J’pura hospitals

Five players of the national volleyball squad, who were diagnosed with dengue fever, have been transferred to Negombo and Sri Jayewardenepura hospitals for further treatment, according to official reports. 

Three players are currently being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Negombo Hospital after their conditions became slightly serious as reports reveal.

Players of the national volleyball squad were undergoing a residential training programme under a bio security bubble targeting the upcoming Asian Volleyball Championship at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium and were housed at the Sugathadasa Hotel.

However all 20 players were tested positive for COVID-19 and eight out of them were identified as dengue patients. 

Sri Lanka Volleyball Association (SLVA) immediately called off the residential training programme and after the condition of players, who were being treated for dengue became critical, they were transferred to the two hospital for immediate treatment. 

According to SLVA officials, Dr. Lal Ekanayake, the head of Sports Medical Institute of Ministry of Sports, has been appointed to oversee the players who are affected with dengue. 

With the current condition, Sri Lanka has decided to withdraw from the upcoming Asian Volleyball Championship, which was to be held from September 12 to 19 in Chiba, Japan.

SLVA has officially announced the Asian Volleyball Federation of its present situation and the decision to withdraw from the regional tournament.
