The Commonwealth Chess Championship, an international event organised jointly by Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, FIDE and the Commonwealth Chess Association, will begin from Saturday (30) at Citrus Hotel in Waskaduwa.
The championship will continue until August 7 and has attracted a total of 10 International Grandmasters, eight Woman Grandmasters and 15 International Masters and Woman International Masters in addition to a large number of highly rated players in the member countries of the Commonwealth.
Over 150 players from commonwealth member countries including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Malaysia, South Africa, England, Canada and Australia will contest alongside Sri Lankan players.
The tournament will be conducted on a Swiss System over 10 rounds and the players will compete for a total prize fund of Rs. 2,500,000/-.
Approximately1 50 players from Sri Lanka will compete in this tournament in which Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded in Open, Women, Senior (Over 60 years), Under-20, Under-18, Under-16, Under-14, Under-12, Under-10, Under-8 categories for boys and girls.
The Opening Ceremony will be held on Sunday (31) at 9.00am under the patronage of the Minister of Sports, Dayasiri Jayasekara.
