Chief Minister’s bad mayor wins top award from Govt

The Matara Municipal Council was adjudged the best Municipal council of the country by the Local Government Ministry this week.

Matara Mayor Upul Nishantha, whom the Chief Minister for the southern province Shan Wijayalal de Silva wants removed on allegations of mismanagement of the council, collected the award from Local government Minister A.L.M Athaullah. Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena was also present at the occasion in Matara on Thursday. The Matara MC was selected the best Council on the basis of it being the most efficiently-managed council with transparency and easy access to the public.

Earlier Mayor Nishantha was removed from the post but he took legal action and was restored. But the Chief Minister has filed action in the Court of Appeal against the decision.

The Matara MC was also awarded Rs. 500,000 in cash. The Kurunegala and Nuwara Eliya councils were selected the second and the third best councils.
