A new traffic scheme implemented in Kandy yesterday was brought to an abrupt end after it caused a major traffic jam, leading to several hours of delays.
The one-way traffic scheme, put into operation by Kandy DIG Pujitha Jayasundera, was short-lived and had to be brought to a halt by 3pm.
The reversal came as the Organisation for the Protection of Public Property alerted DIG Jaysundera about a Supreme Court ruling. According to this order, any ‘one way’ traffic scheme could be implemented only in concurrence with the five named dons of the Faculty of Engineering at Peradeniya University.
The General Secretary of the Organisation for the Protection of Public Property said the implementation of the traffic scheme, without following the guidelines set out in the Supreme Court Case SC154/2007, though not palatable, could amount to contempt of court.
Kandy has only two by-roads and this is said to be a major problem faced by any new traffic. The court order also calls for the setting up of new by-roads before a one way traffic scheme is put into operation. |
