Another Advance Level examination is over. Both the students who sat for the exam and their parents are still enjoying the relieved feeling. It takes time to relieve the pent up pressure. Once it is done if not the students, at least the parents would be keen to see how the rest of the time be spent until the results are out.
Those who have doubts about the outcome definitely will be looking at for a second go. Still there will be spare time for them to engage in other useful activities. Some take up driving lessons, other swimming lessons, etc. However many still does not know how to use this time efficiently and effectively so that they would be able to prepare themselves to take major decisions of their life.
Some may be thinking of entering in to a career immediately and others higher studies. There will be others who will want to have both.
Yet decisions about these are normally taken haphazardly without much thinking.
Advice is sought from various relatives and friends but many cannot advise on areas others than what they are exposed to.
There are various institutes that propagate their own product lines and some with little outside assistance go in those opened up paths.
Many fail to look at all options.
They also fail to understand what really suits them. People are different. They have different desires. They have different abilities. They also have different personalities. Hence not only a student should select the best option available but the one that suits him/her.
Career guidance is the solution.
However to give career guidance it is necessary to do an evaluation of the person. This takes time and cannot be done in one encounter.
Distance Learning Center Ltd (DLC) has come out with a solution to this issue. It is offering an eight week program that not only helps participants to identify a path that suits them but also prepare them to pursue such a path.
The program is offered with activities that require the active engagement of the participants and also use of internet based resources in doing so. DLC with its state of the art multimedia laboratories with fast web browsing is able to provide trouble free experience to the participants.
DLC is a fully state owned company which comes under the purview of Presidential Secretariat and is also the Sri Lankan node point of the Global Development Learning Network of the World Bank Institute.
Program comes in four separate modules where the first one will enable the participants to understand the self, surrounding world of opportunities (occupations, vocations, business and higher education), how a best fit between the self and the opportunities can be obtained using one's own mental faculties while avoiding usual mental traps people fall in to.
The second module will enable participants to have a detail plan for career development. Also they will be able to distinguish the traditional qualification acquisition from the real practice and application of knowledge, in order to create new employments/businesses (Entrepreneur) rather than seeking a terminal employment to dedicate rest of their lives.
The third module will enable the participants to pursue building useful relationship and groom character, be a leader and manage problems/difficult people so that one can achieve success whatever the situations (social/work) he/she faces. Fourth module will enable participants to acquire knowledge on available funding and scholarship/fellowship options, how to request a stake in those and obtain the resources of some of the ICT related sources that facilitate further learning and growth, while pursuing a career or higher education and market himself in the process.
Total program is of eight weeks with full 18 days of contact sessions and separate guided assignments for which limited internet support will be provided, in addition.
