Two fishermen from Palammadhu in Batticaloa were believed drowned at sea yesterday when their boat capsized due to bad weather, police said.
Navy personnel have been called in to recover the bodies of the fishermen who had gone to sea despite the bad weather warnings. The Department of Meteorology said fishermen in the eastern and northern coastal areas should be vigilant due to the low pressure atmosphere around Sri Lanka.
The department said heavy showers and strong winds were expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces while rain will continue in the Eastern, Northern, North central, Uva and Southern provinces.
Last month, the Meteorological Department had been severely criticized for not warning of gale force winds in the south where scores of fishermen were drowned. |
