Interact district conference

By Thulasi Muthulingam

The 19th Interact District Conference, which is one of the most important events in the Interact calendar is scheduled to take place on March 15, 2009 at the Mt. Lavinia Hotel from 9am onwards. It will be hosted by the interact clubs of Zahira College Colombo and Mahanama College, under the theme ‘Beyond Expectations’.

Interact Clubs are the youth branch of the Rotary Club, for young people between the ages of 14 to 19. Currently there are 150 schools in the areas of Kandy, Galle, Malwatha and Colombo with Interact Clubs though there are only 1600 students enrolled. According to project co-chairperson, Thaha Adamjee, this current figure is a great reduction from about 10 years ago when the student membership was about 16000. He stresses the importance of young people becoming involved in service activities, not just for the sake of the community but for their own sakes, whereby they can develop their personalities as well as networking and leadership skills. The young people of today are the hope of tomorrow.

There are programs all over the world to develop them to take on this responsibility and the Interact Movement is one such. There are currently more than 10,700 clubs around the world with around 200,000 students involved. The Interact Clubs of Sri Lanka take part in various service activities such as visiting orphanages, elders’ homes and hospitals, shramadana and other general community work.

Service oriented and self development motivated students are encouraged to join, form Interact Clubs in their school if they don’t already and participate in the above conference. For more information, please contact project co-chairperson Thaha Adamjee on 0775 824 586.
