Looking to break free

By Thulasi Muttulingam

Break free was the theme of the Leo Youth Camp 2009, organized by the Leo Club of District 306A1.
“Break Free 2009!! The camp truly lived up to its theme. From hiking through the forest in the rain to building our own raft, the Leo Youth Camp 2009 is one of the best experiences that I have encountered. Can’t wait to Break Free again,” says Leo Chavindra of the Leo club of Moratuwa Ratmalana.

The Leo movement is the Youth arm of Lions Clubs International, the largest Non-Governmental Service Organization in the world. There are 122 Leo clubs based in Sri Lanka under six administrative districts of which District 306A1 is one.

Their expectations from the camp according to its organizers were to: Develop leadership and character qualities using the outdoors as a training medium, promote Leoism, enhance fellowship and experiences among the local and foreign Leos, realize individual potentials and break free from the hectic daily routines of Leos and offer them the opportunity to relax and enjoy life in tranquility.

The camp activities took place at Action Lanka Adventure Based Camp, Kalugowtanna, Kitulgala, over three days from February 21 – 23. Activities included games designed to build trust, creativity, team work and problem solving. There were also adventure activities on both land and water, entertainment activities, yoga and meditation, as well as leadership workshops.

“It was an escapade with over 100 youths coming from diverse walks of life. We often find that gaps in societies and differences in personalities restricts the youth from exploring the strength of brotherhood and the resulting synergies. Therefore all activities involved breaking the physiological barriers and how to optimize synergy by working as a team. Hence the theme of this event was titled as ‘Break free,’” says the camp chairman, Leyon Aponso.

According to him, the camp was successful in achieving this and several participants bonded so well that they exchanged phone numbers and contact details in order to keep in touch, after the camp was over.
