Major techno exhibition in October

By Quintus Perera

Technology Transfer is an expensive exercise, but participating in exhibitions such as National Engineering and Technology could enable the participants to gain knowledge on new innovations and inventions at a lesser cost, said Prof Ananda Jayawardane, President-Elect, Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) and Chairman, Techno 2010 Exhibition and Awards while declaring the launch of Silver Jubilee Techno 2010 in Colombo last week.

IESL conducted its 24th National Engineering and Technology Awards 2009 (Techno 2009) and awards were presented to the winners of stall holders who participated at the Techno 2009 Exhibition. Techno 2010 to be held from October 8 to 10, 2010 at the BMICH was also launched at this event.

Prof Jayawardane elaborating on the new approach and innovative outlook of the Silver Jubilee Techno 2010 that aims at making life easier as engineering is people oriented, said that the first exhibition was first held in 1985 as “Electro Techno”.

He said it had now grown in scope, spreading its wings to all areas of engineering to enhance its effectiveness and benefits to all stakeholders with the objective of bringing out and unleashing the country’s multi-disciplinary engineering talents and facilitate technology transfer to drive Sri Lanka into technological excellence for the country’s economic development and raising the standard of living of the people.

With this objective Techno 2010 covers all disciplines of engineering such as agriculture and plantation, civil, electrical, electronic, communications, mechanical, automobile, ICT, building services, textiles, chemical, etc.. Every discipline is covered and includes all sectors and industries like construction, manufacturing, services, infrastructure and household.

The exhibitors include importers of latest engineering equipment and products; specialised/modern service providers; local producers of engineering and related equipment; local product manufacturers of all sectors (big and small); R&D institutions; consultants; universities and other educational institutions; entrepreneurs/inventors/innovators; professional bodies; ministries; foreign companies/organisations; and an array of IESL stalls by different sectional committees.

Prof Jayawardane said that the major features at the Silver Jubilee include the IESL Engineering Pavilion; Robot Competition organised by the Young Members Section of the IESL; Vidatha Program in collaboration with the Ministry of Science & Technology; Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) in collaboration with the IESL JIY Committee; and local products in collaboration with the Maubima Lanka Foundation.
He said that the participants are up for multi-faceted benefits such as connecting Seed-Need (identify technological solutions/parties/expertise/consultants (seeds) for those who need technological solutions/advise (needs); as a cost effective marketing mechanism for the exhibitors; networking of manufacturers and suppliers with professionals; as a source of education; opportunities for engineers; competition as a motivational tool; facilitating entrepreneurship; technology transfer; and celebrations.
