Sri Lanka may show vast strides in socio-economic development in recent years but research shows that nearly 22 % of its children below the age of 5 suffer from under-nourishment which usually result in long-term adverse health effects*. Even though the consumption of inadequate quantities of milk may be one of the factors associated with this crippling social fiasco, no data is available in Sri Lanka on the patterns of milk consumption and its relationship to child development.
Anchor Institute, globally-renowned research hub involving 100 reputed international scientists breaking new grounds in the sphere of dairy development has in the last two years given grants to the tune of over Rs. 5 million to Sri Lankan Universities. Its latest grant of Rs. 2.3 million will be channeled by researchers to gather vital statistics on child nutrition. |
