The CIC Charitable and Educational Trust fund along with CIC Manussakama donated a Levo Stand up Electric wheel chair to Ms. Samitha Samanmalee, a paraplegic final year medical student, at a function held in Colombo last week.
CIC responded to a request made by Ms Samanmalee to acquire a stand up wheel chair which LEVO Ag had refused to ship as there was no agent here for serving of their equipment. In response CIC had dispatched two officers to Levo Ag Switzerland to enhance their technical capability. Here they were successful in securing the agency for the full range of Levo products.
Speaking at the occasion, Ms Samanmalee said that she had located this product with the help of another paraplegic medical student in England via the Internet. However the cost of Rs 3 millon was prohibitive to her. Several Sri Lankans living in the USA and UK agreed to meet the cost but the company was reluctant to ship it as there was no service back up in Sri Lanka. It was at this juncture that CIC stepped in and made this possible. With the ‘Stand up Wheel Chair’ she could now examine patients at their bedside without much difficulty. As a result she could now achieve her ambition in becoming a doctor and serving the people, she said.
Levo Stand up wheel chairs are designed to minimize the occurrence of pressure sores. This is a main concern of paraplegics and other movement impaired persons, said Hasith Ahangama Head of Surgical at CIC. With this product any mobility impaired person could stand up and be at eye level with one’s peers, he said. This is a main factor that boosts the morale of these people and contribute to their physical and mental well being, he added. |
