North-East farmers to play bigger role in development : Deputy Minister

The National Agribusiness Council operating under the auspicious of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce held its Agribusiness and Awards 2010 at the BMICH last week with Lucky Lanka Milk Processing Co (Pvt) Ltd becoming the National Agribusiness Company of the year while Nelna Farms Pvt Ltd was the first runner-up and S.J.S.Condiments Ltd the second runner-up.

The award for the Best National Farmer award was clinched by D A Sujeewa Kumar in the Dambulla district and first runner-up was Anthonypulle Siridaran in the Mannar District. The second runner-up in that event was P. Ranjan in the Hambantota District.

Chief Guest at the event, Jagath Pushpakumara, Deputy Minister of Agriculture said that with the addition of the farmers from North and East agriculture in the country could be further developed. He said that the government highly appreciated the role played by the private sector companies in developing agriculture in this country.

He said that they expect a bigger role played by the private sector and the government is always willing to help the private sector in this regard.
