Maxis of Malaysia controlled-Sri Lanka Telecom has announced the recent commissioning of the first phase of what the company has termed its "fibre optic cable superhighway", connecting the South and the North of the country "via the A9 main route".
This phase encompassed the laying of 177 kilometres of optical fibre cable, allowing the Jaffna, Manipay, Sitthankerny, Chunnakam, Kopay, Chavakachcheri and Nelliady areas to soon access the company's broadband product offering. It has also been indicated new telephone exchanges in Mankulam and Mullaitivu have been put in place to boost basic and also broadband facilities in the area.
Further parts of this project are also suggested to include connecting Mannar, Vavuniya, Trincomalee and Jaffna along the A9. This will also use existing infrastructure which has already gone as far as Vavuniya and Mannar in the Northern Province. As such, the next step has been identified as connecting Vavuniya to Killinochchi and Kilinochchi to Jaffna. |
