Yohan Senarath of Colombo International School was recently awarded a place in the Global Scholars’ Programme at Clark University. As part of the programme Yohan will be receiving a $28,000 annual scholarship for a period of four years, an additional $2,500 stipend for an internship during his sophomore or junior year and participation in the Global Scholars’ Mentor Programme, including a semi-annual dinner hosted by Dr. John Bassett, President of Clark University.

In addition a series of faculty advisor, staff and alumni leadership mentors will be supporting him. Entrance to the Global Scholars’ Programme is restricted to international students who have demonstrated potential to provide leadership in their community and the world. During his gap year, Yohan worked extensively on the issue of Gender Based Violence completing internships at the United Nations Fund for Population Activities and Women Defining Peace, a project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency. He also co-directed a theatre production ("Apeksha") pertaining to GBV to promote awareness on the issue in Sri Lanka.
Some of his other achievements in the extra curricular field are his extensive experience in the field of Model United Nations having participated in 15 conferences, winning 5 Best Delegate Awards and Chairing in 7 conferences. One of his most notable feats was emerging 2nd out of 400 scholars coming from 70 countries at the Global Young Leaders' Conference held in Washington DC and at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
His ranking entitled him to be one of three chairs at the final Global Summit Conference comprising 400 scholars held at the United Nations Headquarters as well as receiving an invitation to attend President Barrack Obama's Inauguration. Yohan also captained the senior CIS Debating Team of 2009 during which time CIS emerged finalists in several of the most prestigious debate tournaments in the island including the most prominent, the annual Law Faculty School Championships. Yohan would like to thank all those who helped him throughout his career without whom all of the above would not have been possible. |
