Nottingham's first civic college was opened in the city centre in 1881, four years after the foundation stone was laid by former British Prime Minister, W E Gladstone.
One of the world's leading universities: In the latest global tables published in 2008, The University of Nottingham was again confirmed as a world-class university. They are:
- Ranked 10th in the UK and 26th in Europe by the established world rankings index compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University
- In the Top 1% of all universities worldwide in The Times Higher World Rankings 2009 with a ranking of 91st in the world - a 75 place rise since the table's first publication in 2004
It has three campuses in Nottingham, pioneering campuses in China and Malaysia, medical and nursing schools in Derby, Lincoln and Mansfield as well as Nottingham, and UK's first new Vet School for more than half a century.
The Medical School opened in 1970, and was the first to be established in UK in the 20th century.
The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus opened in September 2000 to become the first campus of a British University in Malaysia and one of the first anywhere in the world - earning the distinction of the Queen's Award for Enterprise 2001 and the Queen's Award for Industry (International Trade) 2006.
The High Achievers’ Scholarship:
The High Achievers Scholarship is an automatic scholarship for Foundation and Undergraduate programmes of study.
Students who meet the criteria will automatically be awarded the scholarship, whereby they will only have to pay 75% of their tuition fees.
