Monash University was invited by the Malaysian government to open a campus in 1998. It is the first foreign university campus in Malaysia and was created at Bandar Sunway in Petaling Jaya. Classes commenced in July 1998. At present there are some 4,500 students and 500 staff. All academic staff members are expected to engage in scholarly research.
Monash University Sunway campus is just 40 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur with easy access to shopping malls, medical centres, banks, restaurants, Water Park and Extreme Park. Students at Monash University Sunway campus participate in the inter campus mobility options available to all Monash students and award courses from The Sunway campus award a range of courses from bachelor to doctoral level from six schools including Business, Engineering, Science, Information Technology, Medicine and Health Science, Arts and Social Science. Now over ten years old, the Sunway campus of Monash University is an exemplar of transnational education.
The campus continues to develop steadily, and now enjoys excellent facilities for world-class education and research. It has 40 dedicated science labs, 24 specialized labs for engineering, state-of-the-art radio and TV studio, multimedia lab, journalism lab, communications lab, auditoriums with 350 capacity each, lecture theatres and a fully equipped library containing a collection of 51,428 items. Additionally students can access the Monash online databases and collection which includes 243,838 e-books, 33,991 e-serials and 798 electronic databases as well as online lectures, reading lists and past exam papers.
It has a diverse and multi-cultural environment with more than 3,300 students from 47 countries including Indonesia, Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Mauritius and Korea.
Tuition fees and cost of living in Malaysia is very much less than Australia, UK and US. It is closer to home with a large Sri Lankan student community and a perfectly safe environment. Sri Lankan students after O/Levels or A/Levels can reduce their cost further by starting their degree programmes through the Monash College programmes offered at ANC Education in Sri Lanka and transferring to Monash University Sunway campus in Malaysia to complete their studies.
For students after O/Ls, ANC offers the Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY) which is a world recognized equivalent to A/Levels. For students after A/Ls, ANC provides the equivalent of the first year of university through the Monash College Diploma Part 2. Student's entry to 1st year of the degree is guaranteed for the full range of faculties upon successful completion of MUFY and successful completion of Diploma Part 2 provides guaranteed entry into the 2nd year of Monash University Sunway campus in the fields of Business and Engineering.
